National Walking Month
May is recognised as National Walking Month, encouraging people of all ages and abilities to get moving and experience the benefits of regular walking. Walking is one of the simplest and most effective ways to improve both physical and mental health whilst also playing a key role in rehabilitation and injury prevention.
Why does regular walking matter?
Improve cardiovascular fitness and overall endurance
Support joint mobility and muscle strength
Help manage weight and reduce the risk of chronic conditions
Boost mood and reduce stress levels
Enhance balance and coordination
How Physiotherapy Supports Walking
As physiotherapists, we often use walking as a foundation for recovery and long-term health. It plays an important role in restoring movement following injury or surgery, while gradually rebuilding strength and confidence. Walking also helps to improve posture and walking mechanics (gait), and can be an effective way to support pain management and reduce stiffness.
We can also assess your walking pattern and provide tailored advice or exercises to help you move more efficiently and comfortably.
The key to success with walking is consistency and progression. Start at a level that feels comfortable and build gradually over time. Even short, regular walks can make a significant difference to your health and wellbeing.
If pain or injury is holding you back, our team is here to help you move safely and confidently.
