What Is Physiotherapy?
Physiotherapy is a healthcare profession regulated by the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC) in the UK. It focuses on restoring movement, reducing pain and improving physical function through a range of hands-on treatments, therapeutic exercises and patient education. Physiotherapists complete a minimum of three years of undergraduate degree-level training, qualifying them to assess, diagnose and treat a wide variety of musculoskeletal, neurological and sports-related conditions.
At Harding Physiotherapy, all physiotherapy treatment is underpinned by NICE guidelines, CSP guidelines and the HCPC code of practice, ensuring you receive the highest standard of evidence-based care at every appointment.
Our Physiotherapy Treatment Methods
Our physiotherapists use a wide range of clinically proven treatment techniques, tailored specifically to your condition, lifestyle and goals. Following a thorough initial assessment, your physiotherapist will develop a personalised treatment plan that may include:
Manual Therapy
Hands-on joint mobilisation and manipulation techniques based on the Maitland and McKenzie approaches to reduce pain, improve joint mobility and restore normal movement patterns.
Soft Tissue Techniques (STM)
Targeted massage and soft tissue release to reduce muscle tension, improve circulation and promote healing in injured or overloaded tissues.
Acupuncture
Chelsea Harding is registered with the AACP (reg. 10388) and uses Western medical acupuncture as an adjunct to physiotherapy treatment, particularly effective for persistent or complex pain presentations.
Ultrasound Therapy & Electrotherapy
Evidence-based electrotherapy modalities to support tissue healing and reduce inflammation.
Cupping & Kinesiology Taping
Adjunct therapies used alongside manual treatment to aid recovery, support joints and manage pain.

What to Expect at Your Physiotherapy Appointment
Initial Assessment
Your first appointment will involve a detailed assessment of your condition, medical history, lifestyle and goals. Your physiotherapist will carry out a physical examination, including movement analysis, strength testing and special clinical tests, to establish a diagnosis. You will then receive an explanation of your condition and a clear treatment plan outlining recommended interventions and expected timescales.
Follow-Up Treatment Sessions
Subsequent sessions build progressively on your initial treatment. Your physiotherapist will reassess your progress, adapt your treatment plan as needed and introduce new techniques or exercises appropriate to your stage of recovery. Each session is tailored to you, not to a generic protocol.

Frequently Asked Questions About Physiotherapy
Do I need a GP referral for physiotherapy?
No. You can refer yourself directly to Harding Physiotherapy without a GP referral. We accept self-referrals, GP referrals, consultant referrals and insurance referrals.
How many physiotherapy sessions will I need?
This depends entirely on your condition, its severity and how long you have had it. After your initial assessment, your physiotherapist will give you an honest estimate of how many sessions are likely to be needed. Many acute conditions resolve in 3-6 sessions; more complex or longstanding conditions may require more.
Is physiotherapy painful?
Physiotherapy is not intended to be painful. Some hands-on techniques may cause temporary mild discomfort during treatment, particularly when working on stiff joints or tight muscles, but this should be manageable and brief. Your physiotherapist will always work within your comfort levels.
