What Is Western Medical Acupuncture?
Western medical acupuncture (also known as dry needling or contemporary acupuncture) is an evidence-based adaptation of traditional acupuncture, practiced within a conventional medical framework. Unlike traditional Chinese acupuncture, which is guided by concepts of energy flow, Western medical acupuncture is informed by current knowledge of neurophysiology, anatomy and research evidence. Fine, sterile single-use needles are inserted into specific anatomical points, muscle trigger points or along neural pathways to achieve therapeutic effects including pain relief, muscle relaxation and modulation of the nervous system.
