What is Tennis & Golfer’s Elbow?
Tennis and Golfer’s Elbow doesn’t just affect those who play sports! It is pain around either side of the elbow, and can be caused by new injury, or by repetitive overload stemming from a variety of activities, such as typing, driving, gripping, gardening, or sporting activities.
Tennis Elbow
- Pain and tenderness on the outer bony part of the elbow, which can radiate to the forearm and wrist. Pain is often worse with gripping, lifting, typing, or shaking hands.
- Causes: It is a degenerative overuse injury, not usually true inflammation, caused by repetitive wrist extension and gripping. Common activities include racquet sports, painting, plumbing, or excessive typing.
Golfer Elbow
- Symptoms – Inner Elbow Pain: Dull ache or pain at the bony part of the inside elbow, possibly extending down to the forearm and wrist.
- The area may be painful to touch. Stiffness in the elbow or weakness in the hands and wrists. Pain increases with flexing the wrist, gripping, or twisting (e.g., turning a door handle)
Assessment and testing will help to confirm the issue, after which we can commence treatment. This may include short term activity modification, hands on treatment, electrotherapy modalities, taping, a progressive loading plan and relevant advice and education to your specific requirements.
