YOUR PHYSIOTHERAPY or SPORTS THERAPY INITIAL ASSESSMENT
For all self-funding and private health care referrals please allow up to 30 minutes for your initial assessment. During this appointment a thorough history of your symptoms will be taken, followed by a detailed physical examination of the affected area, including carrying out any special tests which may be indicated. Your physiotherapist will then explain their clinical impression of your injury and advise you of the most appropriate treatment plan.
You will also receive your first treatment in this time. Treatment is likely to include a mixture of "hands on" techniques (such as soft tissue release, joint mobilisation and electrotherapy) and home exercises - specifically chosen to compliment the treatment received during sessions and to promote your rehabilitation. Your therapist will happily answer any questions you may have during this assessment.
PHYSIOTHERAPY or SPORTS THERAPY FOLLOW-UP APPOINTMENTS
For follow up sessions please allow up to 30 minutes.
At each follow up session you will have a re-assessment, to ascertain progress made. Your treatment program and home exercises will be altered accordingly, and treatment during your session is again likely to be a combination of techniques, such as those outline previously. Your therapist will happily clarify any details for you, or answer questions throughout this session.
Body Composition Testing and Analysis - New Service for 2025!
What Is Body Composition Testing?
A body composition test is a method used to determine the proportions of fat, muscle, bone, and water that make up a person's body. It provides a more detailed picture of health than just weight alone, as it reveals the relative amounts of different tissue types. Two people of same sex, age and body weight may look completely different from each other because they have a different body composition. For more detail on body composition click here
For our testing, we use InBody, a machine which uses Bioelectrical Impedence Analysis (BIA) - for more detail about this, click here
What it measures:
InBody scans provide insights into:
Body fat mass: The amount of fat in your body, both visceral and peripheral. Visceral fat is of particular importance as this is the fat stored around your organs. High levels of visceral fat can affect organ function, hormone balance and has links to increased risk of diabetes, heart disease etc. Interestingly, you can have a healthy or low weight yet still carry higher levels of visceral fat.
Skeletal muscle mass: The amount of muscle attached to your bones.
Total body water: The overall amount of water in your body.
Segmental Lean Analysis: Measures muscle mass in different body segments (arms, legs, and trunk).
Basal Metabolic Rate (BMR): The number of calories your body burns at rest.
Why it's useful:
Body composition testing provides a more comprehensive view of health:
It helps assess overall health and identify potential risks associated with excess body fat, such as certain health conditions or diseases.
Monitors progress in fitness and nutrition:
It can track changes in muscle mass and fat loss due to exercise and dietary changes, great for those on weight management plans
It can be a useful tool in identifying muscle loss immediately following surgery, and tracking progress of regaining this.
Helps optimise training and nutrition plans: Understanding body composition can help tailor workout routines and meal plans for individual needs.
A healthy balance between fat and muscle is vital for health and wellness throughout life. Scientific evidence shows that a healthy body composition will increase your lifespan; reduce the risk of heart disease, diabetes, insulin resistance, etc.; increase energy levels, and improve self-esteem.
Detailed body composition analysis provides a more comprehensive understanding of your health than just weight or BMI.
It is helpful for;
Tracking progress: Helps monitor changes in body composition over time, especially helpful for weight loss or muscle gain goals.
Informed goal setting: Allows for more personalised and achievable fitness and health targets.
Identifying potential health issues: Can help identify imbalances in body composition that may indicate swelling or other health concerns.
Who can Benefit from Body Composition Testing?
Athletes: Body composition analysis helps optimise training, monitor progress, and identify areas for improvement in strength, endurance, and performance.
Individuals managing weight: It helps track fat loss and muscle gain during weight management programmes, ensuring healthy and sustainable results.
Health-conscious individuals: It provides valuable insights into body fat percentage, visceral fat, and other metrics, aiding in risk assessment and lifestyle adjustments.
Older adults: It helps monitor muscle mass and overall composition, supporting mobility, independence, and overall well-being.
Individuals recovering from surgery or injury: It helps track muscle mass and fat loss, assisting in post-operative care and rehabilitation.
Individuals with specific health conditions: It can be used to monitor changes related to metabolic diseases, cardiovascular health, and other conditions.
Anyone interested in understanding their body: It provides a deeper understanding of body composition beyond just weight, empowering individuals to make informed choices about their health and fitness.

Accuracy and considerations:
Consistency is key: For accurate comparisons, it's important to have scans under similar conditions (e.g., same time of day, similar hydration levels).
Fluctuations can occur: Factors like hydration, food intake, and exercise can influence results.
Not a diagnostic tool: While InBody scans can provide valuable insights, they are not a substitute for professional medical diagnosis.
